Lonely Planet New York City Travel Guide Lonely Planet Regis St Louis Cristian Bonetto Zora O'Neill 9781743601198 Books Reviews

  • As a native New Yorker, I thought it would be easy to review the Lonely Planet New York City. However, New Yorkers and visitors see the city from a different viewpoint. New Yorkers are intent on their destination. They know where they are going and what they are going to do. Tourists may want to relax, take in the sights, and be entertained.

The Lonely Planet New York City covers Manhattan and also the part of Brooklyn that is closest to Manhattan. That is not the whole city, but is ok. This may be the right coverage for someone on a first visit with a week to spend. When I was growing up in Brooklyn, if someone was going to Manhattan, they would say that they were going to New York or to the City.

Even within the coverage areas, the guide leaves out some sights that I would have included. Perhaps, I know too much about the city. One example is that other NBA team that plays in New York City, namely the Brooklyn Nets. They barely get a mention. They play at the Barclay Center at the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues. See attached map. This intersection is within the Brooklyn map, but without an indication of the Nets' arena. What are we, chopped liver? (Ethnic expression meaning a side dish, or of little value.) Of course, according to the Thomas Wolfe story, "Only the Dead Know Brooklyn." "It’d take a guy a lifetime to know Brooklyn t’roo an’ t’roo. An’ even den, yuh wouldn’t know it all."

On the other hand, the guide may be perfect for people who come from such exotic lands as China, France, or Ohio, and who would like to hit the high points. The guide breaks the coverage into specific neighborhoods and then provides a sampling of restaurants, shopping, museums, sports venues, and entertainment. There is a fold-out map with streets on one side and a subway map on the other. I think that most importantly, the guide provides routes for walking tours. Following these routes can provide unexpected discoveries.

P.S. Vice President Joe Biden has compared LaGuardia Airport to a “third world country.” The reconstruction of that airport, expected to last seven years, started two weeks ago. Last night, I made the mistake of flying into LaGuardia. Fugetaboutit! (New York expression of ambiguous meaning, in this case indicating disapproval.) LaGuardia is now like a third world country in the middle of a civil war. For flying, it may be better to consider Newark, JFK, or White Plains.
  • We are huge fans of the Lonely Planet Travel Guides, and this NYC guide did not disappoint. In a city with so many options, this guide breaks it down by top tourist attractions, neighborhoods, boroughs and other various points of interest. I highly recommend, even if you have been to NYC before, you will find something new and resourceful in this guide.
  • Lonely Planet guides are more useful now than ever. Despite the fact that there are many travel guides and blogs around the Net, it's still hard to find one that stands out. LP Guide is an excellent starter get your bearings, have an intro and then look for further information on the Internet.
