A Recipe for Success Lizzie Kander and her Cookbook celebrates the life of Milwaukee's early twentieth-century culinary wonder. This new addition to the Badger Biographies series will introduce young readers to a remarkable young woman who made a difference in the lives of the early immigrants in Wisconsin. Kander originally created The Settlement Cookbook to assist young Jewish immigrant girls in cooking nutritious "American-style" meals for their families. Since its publication, several generations of household cooks have been raised on the delicious recipes of the cookbook. Proceeds from the sale of the original cookbook helped build Milwaukee's first settlement house and later the city's Jewish Community Center. The century-old cookbook is still in print today. This is a delightful biography, filled with humorous asides, wonderful period illustrations, and of course recipes!

"Just to begin with disclosure: I am a Milwaukeean and Lizzie Kander is a hometown girl. I've owned the 1943 edition of "her cookbook", The Settlement Cookbook, for years. I purchased Lizzie Kander and her Cookbook, Wisconsin Historical Society Press publication, when I was researching Lizzie Kander (who probably would have preferred her other title: Mrs. Simon Kander) for a series of sculptures on Milwaukee history.
The book, part of the "Badger Biographies" series, seems aimed at a middle school readership; yet it is appropriate for all ages because it is well researched and illustrated with over seventy family photographs and documents. The book contains background information placing the inception and development of the Settlement Cookbook in context, as well as presenting a chronology of Kander's life and times.
Kander's cookbook grew from her work at the Mission, a Jewish Settlement House on Fifth Street. Kander espoused the belief that "the only solution of the problem of the poor lies in the education of the children." In 1900 this had a specific urgency for Kander, as a large group of immigrants was arriving in Milwaukee.
A few recipes are included, too, giving the reader an appetite for the cookbook itself! When the men on the board of the Mission refused funding for its publication, Kander turned to friends for financial assistance and persisted until she had enough money for the first publication. The cookbook proved to be a financial success; it went through several editions, each with a consideraion of new recipes and cooking trends, between 1903 and 1991. When Kander died in 1940, she was still trying out new recipes for the cookbook.
For anyone wanting to use this book in a classroom setting, there are thought questions, a glossary, and learning activities at the back of the book; for the general readership, the book gives an edifying and tasteful glimpse into the life of an educator and philanthropist and cook whose passion and commitment made a lasting difference in the lives of thousands. After reading the biography, may I suggest you go to the cookbook itself and make a Sunshine Cake?"
